The purpose of this research study is to understand how individuals view others based on pictures.
You are eligible to participate in this study if you at least 18 years old and have normal or corrected vision.
You are not eligible to participate in this study if you are not at least 18 years old or if you do not have normal or corrected vision.
This study will involve approximately 20 minutes of your time.
The following procedures will occur after you provide consent. You will see a series of faces and be asked to make judgments about them or learn them. Afterward, you may be tested for your memory of these faces. At the end of the study, you will be asked to provide basic demographic information (i.e., your gender, race, and age) and you may be asked to answer some self-report questions, such as your attitudes about politics or feelings toward different social groups. Finally, you will receive a full debriefing.
This study involves no more than minimal risk. There are no known harms or discomforts associated with this study beyond those encountered in normal daily life. If you experience any mental anguish as a result of the study, you are encouraged to contact the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration National Helpline, 1-800-662-HELP (4357), (also known as the Treatment Referral Routing Service) or TTY: 1-800-487-4889 . This is a confidential, free, 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year, information service, in English and Spanish, for individuals and family members facing mental and/or substance use disorders.
The possible benefits you may experience from the procedures described in this study include learning about the scientific process and psychological research. It is also possible that you may not directly benefit from participation in this study.
This study will allow us to have a greater understanding of face perception.
The only alternative to participation in this study is not to participate.
You will receive 2 credits for your participation.
You are free to withdraw from this study at any time. . If you decide to withdraw from this study you should notify the research assistant immediately. You will not be penalized or judged ill should you elect to stop participation. The research team can end your participation; however, should that happen, you will receive full credit for your involvement with the study.
No identifiable information that will be collected and your data will not be traceable to you.
All research data will be stored on a laptop computer that is password protected and only accessible by the principal investigator.
The researcher named on the first page of this form will have access to your study records. Aggregated data will be shared with research associates of the researcher. Again, no information that personally identifies you will be collected.
The researchers intend to keep the research data indefinitely and aggregated data may be shared with other researchers for research purposes only.

If you participate in this project, you will see a series of faces and be asked to make similarity judgments about them.
Your participation in this project is completely voluntary. You may stop participating at any time. If you stop being in the study, there will be no penalty or loss to you. Your present or future interactions with the Psychology Department will not be affected should you choose not to participate.

At the end of the study, you will be asked to provide basic demographic information (i.e., your gender, race, and age). This should take approximately 30 minutes.
I believe there is little risk to you for participating in this research project. If you become stressed or uncomfortable answering any of the questions in the survey, you can skip the question or take a break. You can also stop taking the survey or you can withdraw from the project altogether.
There will be no direct benefit to you for participating in this survey. The results of this project may help improve future research in psychology.
I will not ask you for any personal information, such as your name or address. Please do not include any personal information in your survey responses. During data collection, I will keep all study data secure on password-protected computer. Only the faculty principal investigators, trained lab members, and I will have access to the information during data collection. After completion of the study, de-identified data will be housed indefinitely on a publicly available website for other researchers’ use. Other agencies that have legal permission have the right to review research records. The University of Hawai'i Human Studies Program has the right to review research records for this study.
You will receive one extra credit per 30 minutes of participation as compensation for your time.
The anonymous data collected from this study may be used for future research studies or distributed to another investigator for future research studies, and we will not seek further approval from you for these future studies.
